Why BMI for children is different?
BMI for children and teens is often referred to as BMI-for-age. Unlike adults, where BMI categories are fixed, children's BMI needs to be compared to other children of the same age and sex. This is because body fat amounts change with age and vary between boys and girls.
Underweight
BMI is below the 5th percentile for age and sex.
Healthy Weight
BMI is between the 5th and 85th percentile.
Overweight
BMI is between the 85th and 95th percentile.
Obese
BMI is at or above the 95th percentile.
